How Is Food Grade Silicone Made?

Step 1: Extracting Silica from Sand

Silica is very abundant in nature. It is in the quartz sand. It is, in fact, among the most common elements of nature.

To start the manufacturing, first of all, silica is taken from the sand while removing other impurities. This sourcing difference itself explains how silicone is different from petroleum-derived plastics.


Step 2: Converting Silica Into Silicone

Once the extraction and purification are done, the silica goes into huge industrial furnaces. Here, it is mixed and heated with carbon at temperatures above 1800 °C.

As a result, there comes a chemical change in the composition of silica, i.e., oxygen is separated from it and we get the silicone element.

SiO2+2C→Si+2CO

This is what will form the base for the silicone polymers.


Step 3: Producing Silicone Polymers

To make the silicone polymer, silicone is allowed to react with methyl chloride. These silicone polymers, at this stage, can be in the form of silicone oil, silicone gel, or silicone rubber.

Step 4: Using Curing Agents

Peroxide-cured silicone can have unpleasant odor and may leave residue. However, the reason many manufacturers do this is because using peroxides costs lesser.


  1. Platinum Cured Silicone
